7 signs your chimney needs sweeping now
Your chimney usually tells you when it's overdue — if you know what to listen and look for. Here are the seven signs we'd never ignore.
A chimney rarely fails without warning. The trouble is that the warnings are easy to miss or explain away — until the day they're not. If you notice any of the following, it's time to book a sweep before you light another fire.
1. Smoke comes back into the room
If smoke billows back into the room instead of drawing up the flue, the chimney is struggling to draw — often because of a blockage or heavy soot build-up. This is the clearest sign of all, and the one most worth acting on quickly.
2. The fire is slow or hard to light
A healthy flue pulls air up and gets a fire going easily. If you're fighting to light it or it keeps dying back, restricted airflow from a dirty or blocked chimney is a common culprit.
3. A sooty or smoky smell when the fire's out
A strong, acrid smell from the fireplace when it's not in use — especially in damp or humid weather — points to creosote build-up inside the flue. It won't clear on its own.
4. Dark staining or debris in the hearth
Soot falling into the grate, or dark tarry staining around the fireplace opening, means deposits are accumulating where they shouldn't be.
5. You can see birds, nesting or debris
Twigs in the hearth, the sound of birds, or visible nesting material means the flue may be partially or fully blocked. A blocked flue pushes dangerous gases back into the room.
If your carbon monoxide alarm has ever sounded near the fire, stop using it and get the chimney checked straight away. No exceptions.
6. It's simply been too long
If you can't remember the last sweep, it's overdue. For wood and house coal that means it could be a year or more of build-up sitting in your flue.
7. Your CO alarm reacts near the fire
This is the most serious sign of all. Carbon monoxide is invisible and odourless, and a poorly drawing chimney is a classic cause. Treat any alarm activity as an emergency.
